On 13 August 1955, Lamar Smith, a Black civil rights activist and World War I veteran, was murdered by racists on the lawn of the Lincoln County Courthouse in Mississippi. Despite there being large numbers of white witnesses, including the sheriff who saw a local man covered with blood leaving the scene, no one was charged with any crime.
