John Merrick, Foundder of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance

OTD John Henry Merrick joined the ancestors (Sept 7, 1859 - Aug 6, 1919). Businessman, who was born into slaved in Clinton, NC, he founded various companies in the Raleigh, NC and Durham, NC areas, most notably the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company. Portions of his wealth were channeled back into the Black community through philanthropy. His business acumen and social consciousness made him one of the most influential members of the Black community in his lifetime.
