

John Herman Henry Sengstacke joined the ancestors (Nov 25, 1912 - May 28, 1997). Newspaper publisher/owner of the largest chain of African American oriented newspapers in the U.S. He was also a civil rights activist and worked for a strong Black press, founding the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) in 1940, to unify and strengthen Black owned papers. Sengstacke served 7 terms as prez of the association, which by the early 21st century had 200 members. Robert Sengstacke Abbott, founder of the ‘Chicago Defender’ in 1905 was his uncle.
