James E. Turner (1940-2022) was the founding Director of the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He established the center in 1969. In addition to being a founding figure in Black Studies. Turner was also heavily involved in the public sphere. He was a founding member of TransAfrica. He was involved in the training of a generation of scholars in African American Studies. He is widely known as one of the founders of African American Studies.
