On 19 July 1917, a meeting was held between 10 white members of the International Socialist League and 20 Africans in Johannesburg. They decided to start a night school for African workers every week, studying capitalism, class struggle and workers' organisation, and two months later the study groups formed South Africa's first union for African workers: the Industrial Workers of Africa.
