On 18 July 1964, riots broke out in Harlem, New York – the first of a series of summer racial riots in Brooklyn (on the 20th), Rochester, Paterson, Elizabeth, Newark, Philadelphia and suburban Chicago – after a police officer shot an unarmed 15-year-old Black youth, James Powell.
