Sept 6, 1955: Emmett Till was buried in a funeral at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, IL, after his open-casket viewing from Sept 3-6 attracted thousands of mourners. The viewing, which allowed people to see his mutilated body, was intended by his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, to expose the horrors of racist violence in America. This event became a galvanizing moment for the Civil Rights Movement, as photographs of his body were published in Jet magazine, shocking a nation and the world.
