

OTD in 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This act declared freedom for all enslaved people in the Confederate States. While Lincoln intended that the proclaimation would destabilize the South and preserve the Union, enslaved people had other ideas in mind. Upon receiving word of the act, thousabds of slaves left plantations and joined Union lines. Many Black people throughout the country were aware of the Emancipation Proclamation due to the fact that the executive order, which became the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on September 22, 1862.
