Derek Chauvin Trial: Week 2 Recap

The second week of Derek Chauvin’s high-profile trial continued on April 9th. Week I’s testimony included eyewitnesses to the murder of George Floyd. The testimony was riveting and deeply emotional. Week 2’s testimony focused on medical personnel and law enforcement officials who specifically examined the cause of George Floyd’s death and Derek Chauvin’s conduct

Medical witnesses firmly established Floyd died due to a lack of oxygen. These conclusions challenged the defense theory that Floyd’s death was due to drug use and earlier heart problems. Dr. Andrew Baker, the Hennepin Chief Medical examiner, determined Floyd’s death was a homicide. He also listed a number of contributing factors such as fentanyl and heart disease on the death certificate. Baker explained it was normal procedure to list the main cause and contributing factors. Baker reasserted “cardiopulmonary arrest” resulting from law enforcement’s subdual restraint and neck compression” was the main cause of Floyd’s death.

Dr. Martin Tobin, a renowned pulmonologist, showed video footage of how the pressure applied to Floyd's neck restricted his ability to obtain oxygen and ultimately led to his death. He also conclusively eliminated the possibility of drugs or heart disease as the primary causes of Floyd’s death. Dr. Lindsey Thomas, a forensic pathologist, corroborated Baker and Tobin’s testimony. She added that Floyd would not have died if he had no interaction with Derek Chauvin. .

Police officials focused on Derek Chauvin’s conduct as a contributory factor in Floyd’s death. Medaria Arradondo, Chief of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), testified that Chauvin violated police policy regarding the department's neck restraint rule and refusing to help Floyd when his pulse failed. The chief terminated Chauvin the next day following the incident. Sergeant Jody Stiger, a Los Angeles police officer for and 26 year veteran of the force, said that Floyd’s offense did not warrant the restraint used on him. The medical support coordinator of the department, Officer Nicole MacKenzie, a medical support coordinator with the MPD a testified that officers received CPR and first aid training. Chauvin and the other officers at the scene failed to administer either.

Emotions are running high in Minneapolis as well as the nation. Viewers are reliving the events of last May which led to the demise of George Floyd. They are also being exposed to the ways in which the state is prosecuting and building its case against Derek Chauvin. The nation is on edge to see what the outcome will be.
