On 21 October 1956 Mau Mau rebel leader Dedan Kimathi was captured by British forces in Kenya, marking the effective end of the anti-colonial uprising 4 years and one day after the declaration of the state of emergency to crush the rebellion.
In that period the British executed 1,090 people: more than anywhere else in the history of the British Empire, in addition to killing anywhere between 20 and 300 thousand people in the counterinsurgency campaign.
Despite quashing the revolt, the British were forced to grant independence to Kenya just 7 years later.
