On 18 April 2011 up to 100,000 public sector workers in Botswana went on strike demanding a pay increase amidst high inflation. At a time when inflation was between 7 and 12%, workers had received no pay increases in three years. Offered no pay increase once again, workers walked out demanding a pay increase of 16%. After nine weeks of strike action, it eventually ended on June 12, with the government increasing their offer to 3%. The Botswana government had been following the advice of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to shrink the public sector wage bill.
