On 10 October 1972, Black sailors from the USS Kitty Hawk stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam war decided to disrupt a favourite hangout of white sailors in the segregated, whites-only area called The Strip, in protest at the beating of a Black sailor the previous night. Ten Black sailors took to the stage, while the white sailors began to berate and throw beer bottles at them, which then provoked a full on brawl which had to be broken up by marines.
