On 23 August 1917 the Camp Logan mutiny took place when African-American soldiers who had been sent to segregated Houston, Texas, clashed with police after officers pistol whipped and arrested two of them. 156 soldiers left the encampment and marched on the police, killing some as well as some white residents. Many of them were subsequently court-martialled, with 19 executed and 41 given life sentences.
