12,000 Workers Fired, 2012

On 5 October 2012, 12,000 striking workers were fired by Anglo American Platinum – the world's biggest platinum producer. The company justified this action by citing the failure of workers to attend disciplinary hearings and the loss of 39,000 ounces in output – or 700 million rand ($82.3 million; £51 million) in revenue.
