The murder of Elijah McClain occurred in August 2019. He was approached by Aurora, Colorado police responding to a 911 call in which McClain was described as “sketchy” and wearing a “ski mask.” McClain was confronted by Officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedma. During the ensuing struggle, the officers claimed their body cameras were knocked off. McClain was pinned to the ground and his hands were cuffed behind his back. When Paramedics Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec arrived at the scene, they administered ketamine, a sedative. McClain went into cardiac arrest and subsequently was declared brain dead three days later. He was removed from life support. Initially, Aurora officials declined to file charges against the officers and the paramedics. The outcry from the McClain family and attorney Mari Newman. As well as the murder of George Floyd gave increased news coverage to the story resulting in the reopening and charges against the officers and paramedics involved in the case.
